What happens to us can stay with us. It can shape who we become and how we experience the world long afterwards. Whether exposed to a single event of high impact, or repeated or chronic exposure to mistreatment or a toxic environment, the unresolved resonance of such experiences can have profound impact on us in the present. The symptoms of trauma vary, but all are disturbing and interruptive to healthy functioning. Symptoms are typically grouped into these four categories: intrusive memories, negative changes in mood and thinking, avoidance, and changes in emotional and physical reactions. Left untreated, trauma can lead to a host of other problems that interrupt normal functioning and well-being. There are a range of evidence-based therapeutic interventions that work well in reducing the impact of trauma and in support of healthy functioning.
